So there I was, Watching “Project Runway” the
other day and I noticed that Tim Gunn loves to throw around this rather
ambiguous mantra a lot, “Designers, Make it work…. Oh My God, make it work with
that skirt… Are you kidding me with this hemline? Make it work”. Since Gunn is a fashion force to be reckoned with, it's probably for the better to just go ahead with what he says and recite this Fashion mantra, in hopes that you might just avoid a fashion faux-pas. But How does one go about "making it work"?
To be honest, I didn't know much about this "Tim Gunn"creature up until I picked up His earth-shattering half Memoir/Half Etiquette book called "Gunn's Golden Rules". Its a No holds bar affair as this fashion Maven dishes out his less-than-enduring personal encounters with style celebrities and their bad behavior.
For Example: his legal face off which VOGUE's Editor-in-chief Anna *Nuclear* Wintour over a statement he made in a Magazine ( a battle he won with class )
The story is hilarious! Tim says in his book that Since Anna doesn't like taking the elevator when there are other people around, she had her man slaves form a human chair with their hands and carry her down 7+ flight of stairs and in to the car after a show that he also attended. Talk about over-indulgence! Anna swore that if she ever met Tim again , All Hell would freeze over. I don't doubt her. The woman owns America. She's one of the main Fundraisers for President Obama's administration. She has the power to force designers to do her bidding. She could destroy you with a sneeze.
As a mentor in the Emmy Award Winning reality TV Series "Project Runway", Tim is both Judge and Jury when it comes to coaching the contestants and extending constructive criticism whenever he sees fit.
What's even better about the book is how it summarizes the real fashion industry. He talks alot about how Project Runway striped away the veil of mystique that shrouded the fashion world. People have always bought into this facade that fashion is all about the glitz and glam but then out of the blue, Project Runway shows the reality of the situation. P.R received alot of very harsh feedback from some industry power-players who felt like they were being downplayed and exposed.
From the book itself, Tim noted that the show helped to educate the audience that the industry is most importantly about persistence and hard work. Success is ,after all , 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration.
FILLED to the brim with funny and occasionally sardonic fashion stories, the book is a fantastic read for those who don't know but want to learn self-encouragement techniques, regardless of what their endeavors are.
Our favorite fashion mentor also opens up about his life and childhood, how he found his success(being nice, following passions and taking risks) , and what really goes down behind the scenes of Project Runway .
His stories, especially the ones where he gets severely picked because of his shy attitude, completely won me over. Growing up, I was constantly bullied ( bag got emptied into the garbage, physical abuse, name calling, etc etc etc ) and didn't fit in with the rest. All too often, I would blame others and not try to solve the problem. Had I made it work and took charge of the situation, things would have been different, though I would never change my life for anything. All that drama made me into who I am now and GURL, I am FABULOUS!
From the moment he opens the book with Rule #1: "Make it work" and ends it with the final Rule: "Carry on", Tim charms us with his witty stories , straightforward advice and downright hilarious fashion world anecdotes. Through the book, he laments the dramatic stories in his life, tries to educate us about manners and how they can lead to better relationships, career success and less personal stress.
Tim comes across as genuine and wise. He doesn't hold back with the truth and makes us understand that when it comes to fashion, it's not always about being the bitchiest or most self-obsessed. Along the way, you'll get to learn alot of quirky facts about him too, Like how he was an unpaid consultant for the first 2 seasons of Project Runway. He didn't even plan to be on camera but it all worked out in the end :]
So ,What is "Make It Work" and how did it come about ? As his First Golden Rule , Making it work is about using what you have on hand to transform your situation. Its Always possible to use whatever tools you have at your disposal to create something you're proud of and that gets the job Done. It's just like how I'm in Business school and I feel like I'm stuck with no prospect. Reading his book, it inspired me to continue on with my passion and use what's already around me to MAKE IT WORK!
You're bound to encounter a Fashion 911, and when you do, you'll have to react. You can't just ignore it and move on . This is when you need to make it work and find a way. The book contains an abundance of heartwarming stories that shows how people in Tim's life Made It Work despite the adversities. Such are his own students when he was still teaching at New York's Parsons (college of fine arts that boasts alumni such as Prabal Gurung and Marc Jacobs.)
When you Make it work, You reach a new level of understanding about your abilities to successfully problem solve. When we figure a way out of our tricky life situations, we learn something and gain confidence in ourselves. Making it work = Empowerment
To summarize, It's definitely worth a trip down to your nearest bookstore or library.

Micheal Kors and Nina Garcia as Judges for the Show. |
The book, however, does not give you an extensive oversight as to how one can style clothes better or how to go about breaking into the Biznez . I wished Tim would have explained why Heidi always seems to be screaming whenever she talks on the show. As far as I'm concerned with Project runway, its a show that carries good morals but the winners/contestants, with the exception of Christian Siriano, far too often fade into fashion obscurity whenever their season ends.
It's just like how the models from ANTM disappear off the face of the world once they win or get eliminated. I'm guessing they went to reality TV heaven, never to return unless there'a an all stars season !!!
Once again, I thank you and your continued support by following my posts about fashion here, there and everywhere. Rumor has it that London Fashion week has just started. Its the award seasons which means there's going to be a lot of red carpet style moments soon. BTW GUYS, don't forget to watch the live streaming of Burberry Prorsum's Autumn Winter 2013 for Menswear tomorrow at 11.30 pm !!!!!! Watch it right here at dreamofdior.blogspot.com !!
It's a must for those who loves Christopher bailey and his bespoke Designs like moi ! I'm currently planning to launch my very own fashion venture very soon though my ideas still need a lot of polishing. Good things never really come easy but I'm gonna MAKE IT WORK! I wish Everyone a great weekend ahead. Keep Calm and Make it work!
